The men had County College of Morris student identity cards, but state police could not confirm that they were currently students of the two-year college.

A CCM spokeswoman said she did not know about the accident and could not access student records during the weekend. A man who answered the phone at Pianeta's home declined to comment. The Mendez-Martinez family could not be reached for comment. Police are trying to determine the cause of the accident. Toxicology tests on the driver are pending, Seaman said.

However, the project still can't move forward until a judge decides its fate. That decision ultimately could have a significant impact on taxpayers, as the development could add 148 students to grades K-5 alone when elementary schools already are at capacity. The Morris Chase residential development, consisting of 168 single-family and 250 town homes, would be built between Mount Olive and Flanders roads by Toll Brothers. Township officials have been trying to block the project, arguing that the developer had enough time to get construction under way.

In the fall, the township planning board denied Toll Brothers' request for an extension of project approval, and the Pennsylvania-based developer subsequently filed a lawsuit seeking an overturn of that decision. MORRISTOWN Two 20-year-old Wharton men died in a car accident on Sunday morning when their car struck a guide rail on Route 287 North as they headed home from an in-state trip, state police said. The car, driven by Juan O. Mendez-Martinez, was speeding when it ran off the road for unknown reasons at 3:30 a.m., striking the guard rail and a light pole near Exit 35, said state police Sgt. Russell Seaman.

The car then became airborne and struck a bridge' abutment before landing in the right-side embankment Mendez-Martinez and his passenger, Edward Pianeta, were pronounced dead at the Tom (can Laura Bruno can be reached at (973) 428-6626 or lbruno2gannett.com. 2 s. Brian Fassel, owner of Quiznos sub shop in Denville When PublicMind talks, even Codey listens BY LAURA BRUNO DAILY RECORD WEST MILFORD A flight instructor and a pilot trying to refresh his license were killed Sunday when the plane they were in crashed on takeoff, police said. The four-seat, single-engine Cessna 182 went down around 1 p.m. at Greenwood Lake Airport in West Milford, authorities said.

Witnesses said the plane crashed at the end of the runway after it hit some telephone lines and trees, and it was then engulfed in flames. Jim Peters, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman, said the cause of the crash remains under investigation. The instructor, Harold Botsford 79, of Ringwopd, and Ted Fletcher of Franklin Lakes a licensed pilot was undergoing his biannual check were the only people in the plane, authorities said, but it was not clear which man was flying the aircraft. No one on the ground was injured. DENVILLE Merchants are complaining that the township's parking policies are hurting business because customers are staying away rather than risk a parking ticket while shopping downtown.

Parking spots on the street are one-hour-only from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. There are no meters, but police chalk cars' tires and check back an hour later. Some merchants say they are constantly ticketed, sometimes after parking just one minute over the one-hour limit. "It's becoming a real big issue here.

Parking has become a complex issue in Denville, a small town with a compact, walka-ble main street lined with boutiques, restaurants and specialty stores that seem to draw more than their share of traffic.
